Hurdy gurdy and sweet songs

Johannes Geworkian Hellmann started his musical journey with classical western music but after some years feel in love with the odd instrument “hurdy-gurdy”. With this mystical instrument he found that he could create his own voice within the music.

Since then Johannes has been awarded with the 1st prize in the international hurdy-gurdy competition in France, “Les concours des vielle a roues et cornemuses” during the international festival of Chateau D ́ars 2011. He has also been given numerous important scholarships for his musical work and education.

Apart from playing with the Swedish hurdy-gurdy trio he is also a member of the folkfusionband Garizim and the two duos Symbio and Blankan.

He regularly tours with various projects including musicians from different genres such as swedish traditional music, improvisation, jazz/folk fusion and early historical music. Johannes also led hurdy-gurdy workshops in Sweden, Spain and Germany. Johannes is educated at the Royal academy of music in Stockholm, The department of Swedish traditional music and at the CESMD de Poitou-Charentes in France.

During the years he studied together with Valentin Clastrier, Romain Baudoin, Mikael Marin and Ola Backström. He plays a modern and electroacoustic instrument made by the Austrian hurdy-gurdy maker Wolfgang Weichselbaumer.
